HOW VPU MOVES FROM AN IDEA TO A LIVING FRAMEWORK
VPU is not intended to remain only an idea about relationships.
It is an attempt to translate values into a practical framework — one that can help people understand compatibility, make conscious commitments, share responsibilities, manage a household and navigate change over time.
VPU therefore has two connected dimensions:
The Union — the values, principles and commitments that bring people together.
The Framework — the structures, agreements and practices that help the union function responsibly.
01 — FROM COMPATIBILITY TO COMMITMENT
A VPU relationship begins with people, not with a predetermined structure.
Before entering a serious partnership, the people involved should have the opportunity to understand one another’s:
- values
- expectations
- personality
- priorities
- responsibilities
- financial attitudes
- family aspirations
- communication styles
- boundaries
- personal needs
- long-term goals
Attraction may bring people together.
Compatibility helps them remain together.
The objective is not to find a theoretically perfect person. It is to determine whether the people involved can realistically build a mutually valuable life together.
02 — CONSCIOUS CONSENT
Participation in VPU must be voluntary.
Consent is not treated as a single question asked at the beginning of a relationship. It is an ongoing principle.
People should understand what they are entering, what responsibilities they are accepting, what freedoms they retain and how future decisions may affect them.
No person should be pressured into participation because of:
- emotional dependency
- financial dependence
- social pressure
- fear of abandonment
- pregnancy
- family pressure
- unequal power
- manipulation
A union is meaningful only when participation remains genuinely voluntary.
This follows the core VPU principle that consent must be informed and ongoing.
03 — THE VPU FAMILY
The original concrete VPU family model developed around:
1 man + 2 women
This remains the original and clearest applied VPU family model in the project’s historical development.
However, VPU itself is intended to function as the broader ideological and framework layer, while Value Partner Family represents a possible lived application of that framework.
The distinction is important:
VPU is the framework.
Value Partner Family is one possible application of that framework.
04 — SHARED RESPONSIBILITY
A VPU household is not built simply by adding another person to a relationship.
It requires a conscious distribution of responsibility.
Responsibilities may include:
- household management
- finances
- parenting
- caregiving
- emotional support
- professional responsibilities
- education
- health
- long-term planning
- maintaining the household
- supporting one another during difficult periods
The objective is not necessarily that every person contributes the same thing.
The objective is that the overall contribution and responsibility of the union are understood, respected and managed consciously.
VPU’s developed framework specifically identifies shared responsibility and economic synergy as core principles.
05 — THE FAMILY COUNCIL
A functioning VPU family requires a mechanism for communication and collective decision-making.
The original Family Framework proposed a Family Council, with regular meetings concerning:
- finances
- emotional wellbeing
- goals
- parenting
- household matters
It also proposed differentiated decision-making, with ordinary decisions requiring a majority while particularly sensitive matters such as children, finances and relocation requiring stronger agreement.
These mechanisms should be understood as framework proposals currently open to refinement, rather than immutable VPU law.
06 — MONEY, PROPERTY & ECONOMIC LIFE
VPU recognises that money can become one of the most important sources of relationship conflict.
A mature framework therefore needs to distinguish between:
Shared resources
and
Personal resources.
Possible areas include:
- housing
- food
- utilities
- children
- education
- healthcare
- savings
- investments
- business activity
- personal spending
- long-term financial planning
The original framework proposed shared household expenses alongside individually managed personal expenses and an agreed approach to business profits.
The precise financial and ownership architecture remains an area for further development.
07 — EMOTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY
VPU does not assume that adding people eliminates emotional difficulty.
Quite the opposite.
Jealousy, insecurity, unequal attention, loneliness, resentment, changing attraction and emotional imbalance are treated as real problems requiring conscious management.
A healthy framework therefore needs space for:
- private time
- emotional communication
- individual relationships
- reassurance
- boundaries
- difficult conversations
- changing needs
- emotional repair
Freedom without emotional responsibility is not the VPU objective.
08 — PARENTING & CHILD WELFARE
Where children are involved, their interests must remain central.
The original VPU Family Framework proposed collective parenting, with all members taking responsibility for children regardless of biological connection.
The broader VPU framework treats child welfare as a fundamental consideration rather than an incidental benefit.
This means questions concerning:
- stability
- caregiving
- education
- health
- emotional security
- parental responsibilities
- separation
- custody
- future relationships
must be considered before commitments are made.
VPU should never assume that a particular family structure automatically produces better outcomes for children; that question requires evidence and careful research.
09 — TRANSPARENCY
Transparency is one of the defining differences between a consciously designed union and a hidden arrangement.
The VPU framework rejects:
- deception
- secret relationships
- manipulation
- concealed financial obligations
- deliberately withheld information that materially affects the union
People entering a VPU arrangement should know what they are agreeing to.
Transparency is not the absence of privacy.
Each person can retain personal space and autonomy while remaining honest about matters that materially affect the union.
10 — CONFLICT & REPAIR
Conflict is inevitable.
The objective is therefore not to create a relationship in which conflict never occurs.
The objective is to create a structure capable of handling conflict without destroying dignity or trust.
The original framework proposed a three-level pathway:
Level 1 — Internal Council
Level 2 — Trusted VPU Mediator
Level 3 — Formal Arbitration
The final mechanism remains subject to further development.
11 — THE RIGHT TO LEAVE *
A responsible framework must address not only how people enter a union, but also how they leave one.
No person should be trapped in a relationship because a system failed to provide an exit mechanism.
A dignified exit may require consideration of:
- finances
- housing
- children
- caregiving
- shared assets
- ongoing responsibilities
- emotional closure
The original framework specifically proposed documented financial and parenting responsibilities and an emotional debriefing process when a member exits.
The right to leave is part of responsible freedom.
12 — LAW & SOCIETY
VPU does not exist outside society.
Any implementation must operate within the laws applicable to the people and jurisdiction involved.
The VPU name or framework does not override laws concerning:
- marriage
- property
- custody
- inheritance
- taxation
- contracts
- companies
- immigration
- criminal conduct
- other applicable legal obligations
The precise legal architecture of a VPU family remains an open research area and must be evaluated jurisdiction by jurisdiction.
13 — THE VPU SYSTEM
Over time, VPU may develop several connected layers:
VALUE PARTNER UNION
The ideology and overarching framework.
↓
VALUE PARTNER FAMILY
A possible lived family application.
↓
VPU SYSTEM
Governance, agreements, protocols and operational structures.
↓
VPU DIGITAL PLATFORM
A possible future tool for matching, agreements, finances, scheduling, community and management.
This layered architecture is important because it allows VPU to evolve without reducing the entire concept to one household configuration.
14 — A LIVING FRAMEWORK
VPU is intended to remain a living framework.
Human relationships change.
People change.
Families change.
Children grow.
Financial circumstances change.
Care responsibilities change.
People may develop new aspirations.
Therefore, the framework must be capable of being reviewed, improved and adapted without abandoning its underlying principles.
The original Family Framework itself was explicitly described as a living document.
THE VPU APPROACH
VPU does not promise that its framework will eliminate relationship problems.
It does not promise that every VPU relationship will succeed.
It does not claim that one family structure is universally better than another.
Instead, it asks whether people can approach partnership with:
greater awareness,
greater compatibility,
greater transparency,
greater responsibility,
and greater freedom to make informed choices.
The fundamental idea is simple:
Don’t merely choose someone to love.
Choose people with whom you can responsibly build.
